Passage To Moauv

The Enterprise is on a mission to transport the pet waoul of the Moauvian ambassador from Centarus Base back to his homeworld of Moauv. Moauv is neutral, but it lies near both the Klingon and Romulan neutral zones. Moauvians are an advanced, logical people. The ambassador's pet is called a waoul and it looks like a cross between a nervous bobcat and a furry lizard.

While hunting down the animal aboard ship, the crew's voices start yowling and later fights break out among them. Any person who comes near the animal starts feeling the need to get away and hide and begin to see things through the waoul's perspective. The situation grows serious as the crew starts wanting to strike out and run in blind panic. Spock determines that this effect is a result of a mass telepathic projection from the terrified animal.

To prevent the ship from being disabled by the telepathic effect, Kirk contacts Moauvian Ambassador Oavid. Oavid tells Kirk that his people do not know how to capture a frightened waoul either. Kirk and Spock personally go to look for the waoul in a corridor and soon start fighting because the animal comes near. Relief communications officer Lieutenant M'Ress shows up and takes care of the waoul, which stops being scared when she picks it up. The crew contacts the Moauvian ambassador and tells them that they found the pet. Ambassador Oavid tells the Enterprise crew that his pet waoul is a female and is expecting kittens.

In Vino Vertias

The Enterprise travels to a conference on the neutral planet of Pomplance. The conference's purpose is to discuss claims and rights to the planet orbiting Star WWB7 between the Federation, the Klingons and the Romulans.

Kirk and Spock beam down and meet their host Amilar of the Pomplancian Bureau of Interstellar Affairs. They are then ushered in to meet the other attendees. The Klingon Empire is represented by Ambassador Koft and his aide K'tail who is first officer of the battle cruiser Avenger, The Romulans in attendance are Envoy Bendes and his aide Subaltern Rhuox. After some not-so-amiable banter, they drink a ceremonial toast with the local wine. Spock notices another human in the council chamber that he seems to recognize. The man explains that he is part of the Federation delegation and his name is Jack Sprat. Neither Kirk nor Spock knew of any other Federation representative, and are suspicious.

The delegates then start speaking the unvarnished truth, unable to help themselves. They return to the topic at hand and the Klingons let slip that their claim to the planet is based on rumor and a landing by a drunken scout pilot. The Romulans volunteer that a wandering Romulan prospector laid claim to the planet supposedly, but may not have.

All diplomacy is cast aside and they insult each other, as they can't keep from telling the truth. Spock then announces that Jack Sprat is really Coriolanus Quince, the infamous galactic troublemaker. He is a criminally naïve inventor of undeniable motive, and he has caused several catastrophes in the past ten years while trying to help people with their problems. He admits that he is responsible for the rampant veracity as he planted his "clear" potion into the ceremonial wine making it act like truth serum.

After some discussion, Kirk gives Quince some of the wine and he realizes that he was wrong. Because no one was hurt, he is let go since no actual crime was committed. The conference is postponed to a later date.

Crier In The Emptiness

While the Enterprise is on a charting run through the relatively uninteresting Moran sector, semi-musical sounds start appearing throughout the ship, waxing and waning, varying in frequency. The tones seem to be moving throughout the ship. Also, subspace communications are jammed by its effect. After three days, people are losing sleep and Spock hypothesizes that they are being visited by a being of pure sound.

The senior staff decide that they need to contact the being after a particularly loud and high-pitched tone pierces the air and cracks several console panels on the bridge. Navigation officer Connors brings a musical instrument to the bridge called an Edoan Elisiar. It has a triple keyboard which operates an echo chamber, and it has resonating bars made of bone and a component resembling a xylophone twisted into a Moebius strip. When Connors begins playing it, the sound being responds. After a few promising exchanges with the being, the ship is shaken by a bone-rattling squawk. When Connors plays sad music the sound creature responds in kind, and then as if it understood that its presence was causing sadness, the creature went away.
